Notes and Plans – The Solune Prince

The Solune Prince chapters I’ve completed are… kind of meh.

If I were to put myself in the shoes of a reader, I might think: This series is kind of boring. And it doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere. And if it is, it’s going there very slowly. There situations and characters seem a little lacking. Some of these chapters go nowhere, or add nothing to the story. And why did it take so long to get here?

These are pretty serious concerns, right? I mean, it’s been 20 chapters and not much has happened. If the average chapter is 1000 words (and it’s actually a little more), then that means I’m 20 000 words in and I’m still only at the beginning.

It’s overwhelming. I feel like I’ve sort of shotgun-vomited and pantsed myself into a narrative about nothing, filled with boring characters, and then insulted the reader by adding a “first draft disclaimer.” I mean, maybe I should actually put a little more effort into making my pieces of a high enough quality that I don’t feel the need for disclaimers.

I was at a point where I was almost ready to throw up my hands and drop the serial altogether.

That’s what I was thinking.

And then, on the way to the library, I listened to Falter.

See, that song was one of the biggest inspirational pieces for The Solune Prince, and hearing it again, I remembered a lot of what I was feeling back when I started. I decided to return to The Solune Prince project for sure after that, but with a different mentality.

To practice, to learn, to improve.

This is a first draft, I’m sure there are a lot of people who write a first draft by the seat of their pants, read it over, and then think, “man this is awful.” And, that’s what I’m thinking. It’s pretty awful! But that’s okay, because it’s a first draft. A second draft can (and if it’s got glaring faults, should) be drastically different than the first.

I’m not going to go back and fix the first twenty (geez, twenty?) scenes until I’m done though. I’m not even going to try to fix every single problem I’ve had with those scenes going forward.

I’m just going to focus on one thing at a time, and this time, it’s planning. So, I’m going to do a lot more work planning the rest of the Solune Prince. You know, it was going somewhere, I just kept getting into tangents, and hopefully with a plan, I can avoid that.

In addition, outlining will allow me to know a little bit better where each scene is going, and what it’s trying to do. I may end up with less frequent, but higher quality scenes as a result of planning. Maybe I’ll even outline individual scenes, I don’t really know.

I actually drew out a basic outline before writing this. It looks like I’ve got seven acts to go. Seven acts to get my act together haha. I’ll work on the outline a bit more before posting another scene.

On a side note, I really need to update my categories.

Notes and Plans 2

Thank you, yes, I’m adjusting to my second year as an English major quite well. I love it! I feel so full of energy. Let’s just say that a university is a much better creative environment than a small town and a labour job.

Hey, cool!

Anyone who follows this blog knows that right now the only ongoing project I have is the Solune Prince. I always thought that one project was the best, but studying other bloggers and indie writers, I’ve noticed that many have more than one project. Worse, one project is getting me really restless. My favourite piece, Alice and Finch, was written alongside Evidence (a novella I’m not a huge fan of).

So, I did what any responsible writer should do. I did research. I learned.

Indie writing is not like traditional writing. Some traditional writers such as Stephen King do write non-stop like us, but it seems that once you’ve got a nice backlog you can afford to live on passive income and take a few years between books.

It’s not like that for us. Indie writers, and especially those who self-publish, tend to take on many projects at once. Why? Well, you get sick of writing the same thing all the time. It’s just how humans work! So what do you do? You spice things up. Thus, I’ll be adding a few more projects to The Solune Prince. It seems that other writers and bloggers are doing anywhere from three to seven (yes, seven!) simultaneous projects. Me? I have done one to two.

So, here are the ideas that have been swimming in my head! I don’t know in what form or when they will come about, as I like to keep things as organic as possible, but this list should give you a (very) rough idea on my outlook.

Alexandre Jutt

Alexandre Jutt Dirge’s story was hinted at with Broken Teeth, a cancelled and de-canonized first draft. Don’t read it, it’s awful. And don’t ask why I linked it. Ah!

Anyway, Alexandre Jutt was sold into slavery around her twentieth or twenty-first birthday. She was recently bought by a music producer to be a secret mistress during his visits to the Solune Kingdom. Things get interesting when Jutt starts “cheating” (is it cheating if you’re a slave? I have no f@#&ing clue) on the producer with one of his artists. Then things get even worse when the producer’s wife finds out about the whole mess. Oh, and Jutt’s mother, Hail, is still entirely insane, so she comes in to burn the place down. It’s going to be… really exciting when I actually end up writing this one.

Hannah’s story is become more and more developed in my mind. I’m on the verge of starting this one.

A Short Introduction to the The Chronicles of Hannah Alz-Aeur

Seventh Prince University

Let’s face it, humans love structure, and naturally tend towards hierarchies and the school settings have both.

But, high school is very limiting. You have to almost shrink your brain to enjoy something set in high school, as most Harry Potter fans have been quick to inform me (Why??). Collage? There’s all sorts of things you can do with this untapped setting. Want to write about older characters? Bam! We’ve got mature students. Need a genius? No problem, doctorate and masters degrees are sold here! Want to write about sex without feeling like a paedophile? The average collage student is twenty-five years old! (23.7 in Canada 😉 )

So, here’s an idea I had a while back. What if I took all my young adults and stuck them in college? I could have a lot of fun and it would make for a great episodic series of short stories. Expect this project in the future!

  • Finch Dirge Zeth
  • Wallace Solaris Ceramar
  • Lunesca Solaris September
  • Prince Ten, of the Metch Kingdom
  • Janna Rhye
  • Drake (Aeisticht) Rhye
  • (and more!)

Honestly I’m really excited about this one, it looks like it’d be a nice fun aside for if I get bogged down with my more longform material.

The Solune Prince…

…will hopefully remain my primary project. I want to release at least two chapters a week, so expect that.

Update 2 – The First Day of Many

Hey, all! I’m here to announce a few things.

As I stated in “My Life as of August,” today is my first day without work. I have eight days to move to Windsor from where I am (it’s a twelve hour drive) and get settled in before University starts. Honestly, I’m a little frightened, but despite that I’ve already got some blog changes incoming to mirror my life changes.

Schedule Shift

Right now my schedule is as follows:

Saturday – Off Beat
Sunday – Hybrid
Weekdays – Stories

I’m now cutting Sunday and Wednesday from the schedule. That means that my new schedule will look like this

schedule2.png

That is, no more Sunday or Wednesday releases. It seems that Tuesday is consistently my best performing day, and Saturday is a day for more unique posts. So, here’s the new schedule:

Saturday – Off Beat
Sunday – Usually nothing, unless I go on a spree or have an urgent update.
Monday – Serial or Short Story.
Tuesday – Hopefully a longer, or higher quality piece. Otherwise, expect a story as usual.
Wednesday – Usually nothing.
Thursday – (See Monday.)
Friday – (See Monday.)

The two extra days will be for editing scheduled posts, and for finishing my Current Project.

My Current Project

I desperately need to finish Alice and Finch. I did that thing where you set it aside for a few months to let it simmer. Supposedly this makes it fresh when you go to edit it, so that you catch more mitsakes=,

I sent it out to five beta readers, and NONE of them replied to me or gave feedback.

So, I’m going in blind. And that’s fine with me, I don’t need anyone’s help! (I just would really like it…)

So, full steam ahead for Alice and Finch! I want to publish and have it ready for readers in November. Get ready to buy it 😛

The Other Stuff

The next book on the writing list is Alexa Jutt. I want it out by December. I’m not waiting on betas this time, I’m going to edit when I feel I’m ready.

Absolute Magazine is no longer coming out in October, but instead whenever I get all the pages filled.

Tales of Symphonia is finally getting some more content. It will either be in podcast form or as a stream, maybe both!

My Harry Potter Overview will eventually come out, but low priority.

Next update will be around September 6th or 7th! Bye!

CN: Alexandre Plans

Alexandre Jutt was originally a minor character in Alice and Finch. She quickly became a favourite of mine, and I have a feeling it’s because she’s a more mild, attractive, female version of myself. This is weird, as I don’t like basing characters off of real people, especially not myself. But this was all by accident, so what is to be done!

So who is Lex? Alexandre is a supporting character from Alice and Finch. She was Finch’s first love, even after they realized that they were cousins. Of course, you grow out of such things (unless you live in the east lol), especially when you’re young and related. They never really grew apart though, and so until Alice and Chloe came around, Jutt was his only true friend.

Alexandre “Jutt” Dirge, or Lex, (or the name she hates, Alexa), is a young Riley-Solune. She has all the outward appearance of a Riley, but the height of a Solune. Her eyes are grey, but that isn’t natural, she stumbled across a Methos artifact that slightly modified her brain, and corrupted her eye colour.

Lex is the first character I’ve made that has a known metal illness. Dezallldwinn is obviously insane. Joss has a sort of light-on-life, manic mind. Natasha has chronic depression, I think. Gwenhime has that “white trash crazy bitch” problem. I’m not sure it that’s a technical term, but I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. She had control issues, as in, she hates it when anyone else controls any part of the world. Yes, Gwenhime wants to take over the world, but more on that later, this is about Jutt. Lex is manic-depressive, or bipolar.

Why? Well, I figured if she was a weird copy of myself, I might as well give her my illness too. I also figured that like me, her illness wouldn’t be a big part of her story. Let’s be real, how many narratives give the main character a mental illness and then use it as major plot point? Well, all that I know of. Not Alexandre. She’s been living with it for long enough that it’s just another one of those difficulties she deals with every day. Minor plot point.

I don’t know what to call her story yet, so for now it’s just going to be CN: Alexandre, Codename: Alexandre Dirge.

Alexandre is about Lex’s capture. As punishment, she is no longer allowed her freedom in the gangs, instead she’s become a slave. A rich music producer named Richard Levindeloczyk buys her for his Hannibal house, so that he has a mistress for those long weeks when he has to stay in the Solune Kingdom. (His regular home is in the Djeb.)

Lex quickly learns that not only does Richard have a temper and abuse issues, but that he’s also a lot weaker than she is. Rich is a businessperson, and Lex has been a gang leader for a few years. Needless to say, she figures out how to train him out of his bad habits.

She also learns that he is married, and that the wife, Avvarice (who is just as awful as him) doesn’t know that he has a mistress in Hannibal. Of course, Avvarice eventually figures everything out and things get really messy, especially after Richard learns that Lex has been screwing one of the musicians under his label. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, AM I RIGHT?

So, this story should read like a combination of the now cancelled and non-canon Broken Teeth, mixed with elements of Anna Karenina. (But without all the complexity and prose.) It will also probably be written and released in a seemingly random order, like Pulp Fiction. Not because I’m trying to be clever or artistic, but because I’ll probably have the urge to write some specific scene one day, and just do it. This happens to me a lot, and I’ve been meaning to try writing something out of order and then compiling it together at the end. Maybe this will be that piece.
